Shannon Evaluation - 1

Our media product is the first two minutes of a thriller film, in our first shot we went against the ‘norm’ of a pan establishing shot which I found throughout my research is the typical opening scene however we wanted our opening scene to be different and used a medium close up, we used this as it plays on our genre as a thriller and immediately grabs your attention and makes you wonder why the girl is there which establishes the plot.

Here is a great example of an opening scene from my research which inspired us

We chose to set out the plot in a nonlinear format as we feel it creates more suspicion and allows for the plot to prevail throughout the film and keeps you guessing right to the very end. As we have used the most significant point in the film at the very beginning this will take you on a journey as to how she got there.

In the initial 5 seconds or so we have used non diagetic sound which is a sound track that is played throughout, there is then a moment of silence which creates atmosphere and tension, we then hear diagetic sound between the two characters. We have also used sound bridges to create continuity. We also edited the audio and the visual between the chase scene to jump between shots to give that rushed feeling.

In terms of typography we have used a simple clear text as in the negotiator however we have chosen to use the text over the moving images rather than still as it creates a sense of fluidity, we also used key frames when using the titles so that they dissolve when the characters walk past them which makes them look part of the opening sequence and not like they have just been put on top of an image.

We have used a pull focus shot on two occasions which gives a great effect as it shows who the woman is wanting and it gives a clue as to who is following the girl without revealing the full identity leaving a sense of mystery. Within the chase scene we have also used a canted angle shot which immediately implies something is wrong and something is going to happen.

The lighting we have used gives a ‘dingy’ feel which co-indices with our genre and shows the focus is on the girl, the lighting we used wasn’t a bright white light and had a blue feel showing the cold and sadness of the girl.

Props

Within our two minute opening scene we didnt use too many props, but the props we did use are as follows;
- pillow case acting as 'the bag' over victims head
- cloth acting as a chloroform soacked cloth
- chair (for victim to sit on)
- dust sheets making the place more dingy
- handcuffs (to make it more realistic for the victim)

Music Ideas, Issues and final decision

For our 2 minute opening sequence we wanted daunting music which would gradually build into a fast pace chase music. We initially found it difficult to find the exact piece of music we was wanting as there was so many to choose from. We had a variety of sites to choose from one of those being freemusicarchive.org we eventually chose Tenebrous Brothers Carnival - Intermission from incompetech.com it took us a while to choose this track however we feel it fits with our piece as it gradually builds in to a fast pace piece which fits our chase scene perfectly.

Forest of the Wanted

Location Shot

here is our chosen location for the first scene within our 2 minute opening sequence, after use of dust sheets and re arranging items the shot i feel will work well as it gives that 'dingy' 'dark' feel which we are going for due to it being an interrogation scene. As we are considering using a bright singular spotlight on the victims face we need a dark room which when late in the evening we feel this will be the ideal place

Ellie's Makeup

This is ellies beaten up make up which will be used within the first scene. We used to create this look - dark red lipstick
- dark purple lipstick
- yellow eyeshadow primer
- deep purple eyeshadow
- yellow eyeshadow
- green eyeshadow

we used several videos for inspiration one of those are shown below;

Progress report

We have finished filming for out 2 minute film and we have edited all our shots together now we are beginning to put a title sequence in and putting effects on. We are also currently finding eerie music to use for our title sequence and for the film which will fit with the type of film we are trying to create.
Our blog is nearly finished we just need to add our props, costume, tricky shots, storyboard which have all been done but need to be added to the blog.
We initially planned to shoot the flashback seen for a couple of hours on wednesday 20th February, we planned to start at half 4 so that the lighting wasnt too sunny however we didnt realise it would take as long as it did and we ended up finishing at 7 but the lighting had got drastically darker so we had to start again the wednesday after which we managed to do in a shorter time has we knew exactly what shots we wanted and how to do them.

Analysis of first 10 minutes of Shutter Island

Shutter Island
Analysis of the first 10 minutes
The opening of Shutter Island starts with the screen a bright white and you start to see a ship coming through the whiteness making it look like fog. It uses a wide shot of the ship in the sea surrounded by mist which makes the film from the start seem mysterious.

It cuts to a wide shot of a man crouched in a room allowing you to just see his body. You can see that the boat is swaying which makes you feel uneasy and starts to prepares you for what is to come in this type of thriller film. The main focus of the sound is of the man being sick, however there is music in the background which sounds mysterious. It cuts to a mid-close-up shot of the man standing up staring into the mirror with a cut above his eye. The shot is quite close to allow you to see his facial features specifically the cut. It automatically allows the audience to begin wondering what has happened to him.

Throughout this scene there is boat noises and him on the ship in a room. By the way he is acting it is clear he is suffering from motion sickness as from this medium shot you can see that he is suffering and his dialect, ‘It’s just water,’ suggests that he doesn’t really like water. His costume suggests that he is a detective or fbi as he is dressed in a smart suit with a gun on show. The boat seems empty as all you can hear is him and the boats horn.
It cuts to a long shot where you see the man in a small room at the end of the ship which is joined onto a large open spaced room with some shackles and hooks hanging from the ceiling. The focus is on the shackle nearest to the screen as the man in the background is blurry which means the film clearly wants you to notice the shackles on the roof. It makes the audience wonder what these are used for.

The chains are the ones in focus, making your
eyes see them first.

The focus changes to show everyting the same as
the man walks out of the room

The camera then moves forward to reveal more chains and puts the focus on manual to allow the man and the chains to be seen clear.

Title:  Forest of the Wanted

Duration: 2 minute 10 seconds

Synopsis: A girl is sat in a small dark room with a bag over her head and her hands tied behind her back, she is breathing heavily when a door opens and her head looks towards the direction of the noise. The door closes and footstep are heard getting closer to her. She shouts to the unknown person asking where she is and what they want with her. Miss smith slowly walks over to her and pulls off the bag revealing Daisy's face all battered and bruised, she looks around the room before looking up to Miss Smith who then says to her 'all you have to do is co-operate.' Daisy starts to hyperventalate and struggles to free her hands again. Miss Smith then begins to interrogate her and Daisy pleads that she hasn't done anything and has no idea why she is there. Miss Smith is unhappy with her answers and then puts a cloth to her mouth where Daisy blacks out. It then flashes back to a few days before when Daisy is leaving her house. She walks down her path when it looks like someone is looking at her through the bushes. She continues down a path when she looks behind her and sees an unknown figure following her, she begins to walk faster and faster. As she becomes more scared she starts to run and enters a nearby woods. The unknown figure chases after her in the woods when Daisy falls over a stone in the woods, laid on the floor the chaser slowly walks over to Daisy and pulls out a cloth. She smothers it over Daisys face with her falling unconsious.

Suggested elements:  The interrogater puts a cloth over Daisy's mouth which infers that she is being drugged with chloroform although you don't know for sure what is on the cloth you can imagine that it is some sort of smelling drug. When the bag is removed off of Daisy, she has a black eye, cut on her cheek and a bloody nose which shows that she has been beaten and hurt although the audience never saw this. The small room may allow the audience to feel like Daisy is trapped and may feel like they are trapped too with no way out.
